Sensory Play: Rainbow Rice

بسم الله الرحمان الريم

Now this is an activity that will keep you little ones (or big ones *smile*) occupied for quite some time insha'Allaah. It is very easy to make and you can store it for a long time.

You need:
- few bags of rice
- liquid food colouring (choose about 4 different colours)
- a bowl
- a large container

I used one 1 kg bag per colour. Put the rice in a bowl and add a few drops of food colouring and mix this very well with a spoon until all the rice is coloured. (don't use your hands unless you would like to walk around with rainbow hands as well *lol*). If necessary, you can add a few drops of water to get the colour spread evenly on the rice but be careful not to use too much. I've heard some people like to use rubbing alcohol, but I didn't. Repeat the same with the other colours insha'Allaah.

Put some paper towels at the bottom of a large container and spread out the rice as you can see in the picture below and let it dry overnight like this. The container I use has a lid which you buy separately (Ikea) which makes it easy to store when the children are not playing with it.

Remove the paper towels when dry, add some props and you're good to go insha'Allaah!

My girls absolutely love this. Some comments they made: "It sounds like rain"(when sprinkling it back in the box), "It feels cold", "It tickles" (when sprinkling on their hands). Hope your little ones will enjoy it as well...have fun insha'Allaah!
